Our New Shorter Trivia Quiz

Hey, we're back again...but this time with a slighter newer format on a regular basis. We've gotten a lot of feedback from readers and the majority seem to like a shorter quiz on a weekly basis.

So that's what we're doing.

Starting with this edition, there'll be 5 questions each and every week.

This time out, our questions are all about The Grammy Awards, the latest round of which were handed out just a few weeks ago. The Grammy Awards have been around since 1958, so there's a lot of ground to cover. See how comprehensive your musical knowledge is with this quiz.


QUESTIONS

1. The 1981 Grammy award for Record of the Year went to a singer who used to sing with Kenny Rogers. This song was her only pop number one hit. She was once a member of the New Christy Minstrels at the same time as Kenny Rogers and in fact, the duo had a Top 5 hit together in 1980. The Record of the Year also won Song of the Year for its' writers,Donna Weiss and Jackie deShannon. In the title is the name of a Hollywood acting legend. OK, no more clues, can you name the artist and the Record of the Year winning song?

2. At the 1967 Grammy Awards, presented on February of '68, this LP won Album of the Year as well as Contemporary Album of the Year. It also won a Grammy for Best Engineered Recording as well as Best Album Cover, Graphic Arts. This album has gone on to win critics poll after poll as the greatest album ever. Peter Blake was the winner for Best Album Cover and the cover itself became an instant classic . Geoff Emerick won the engineering Grammy for this album. Think back to 1967, the so-called 'Summer of Love' and see if you can guess the title of this album?

3. The 1993 Grammy Awards, held in New York in March of '94, saw a soundtrack win Album of the Year. The movie that the soundtrack came from starred Kevin Costner and the woman who also won Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. Can you name the woman AND the movie?

4. The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on February 28th, 1980 was the location for the 1979 Grammy Awards. The winner of the Album of the Year Grammy and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male Grammy was a man who during a 'down' time in his career, played piano in local LA bars and went by the name of Bill Martin. In 1974, he had a Top 40 hit song about that experience and since then, has topped the singles chart 3 times. He's been married several times and one of his ex-wives was a world famous fashion model. Who is this Grammy Award winner?

5. The group that won the 1969 Best New Artist Grammy is still together. Their performance at the Woodstock Festival in the summer of '69 was only their second professional gig. At the '69 Grammy Awards, given out on March 11, 1970, this group beat out both Chicago and Led Zeppelin. The following year, their debut album was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year They came together from 3 other hit making groups and have gone on to have many hit singles and albums of their own. They're noted for their intricate harmonies and occasionally add a 4th member to the group. What's the name of this Grammy Award winning group?

ANSWERS

1, The Grammy for Record of the Year in 1981 went to "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes. Kim's written 3 number ones on the country charts thus far - "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", her 1980 duet with Kenny Rogers; "The Heart Won't Lie" a song recorded by Reba McEntire and Vince Gill; and "Make No Mistake, She's Mine", recorded by Kenny Rogers and Ronnie Milsap. In 1994, Kim moved to Nashville where she quickly became a part of the creative community.

2. That would be The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

3. The answer is Whitney Houston and the soundtrack Album of the Year was "The Bodyguard". Canadian David Foster produced the award winning single from the movie and soundtrack, "I Will Always Love You", a song written by country superstar Dolly Parton.

4. Does the name Billy Joel ring a bell? The album that won Billy his Grammy Awards that year was "52nd Street". William Martin Joel was born in the Bronx on May 9th, 1949. He was in the group The Hassles before striking out on his own. During a contractual dispute with his then management company, Billy slipped off to LA where he played piano in bars as Bill Martin. His 3 number one hits are: "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me" in 1980; "Tell Her About It" in '83 and 1989's "We Didn't Start The Fire". Billy wrote his 1983 hit "Uptown Girl" for his then girlfriend, later wife and even later ex-wife, Christie Brinkley. Their daughter Alexa Ray is also a singer. In 1990, Billy was honoured with the Grammy Living Legend Award.

5. The 1969 Grammy Award for Best New Artist went to Crosby, Stills & Nash. David Crosby came from the group The Byrds, Stephen Stills had been in Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young (who sometimes adds a 4th voice to the group, becoming Crosby,Stills, Nash & Young) and Graham Nash who'd previously been a member of The Hollies. Besides Chicago and Led Zeppelin, CS&N beat out Neon Philharmonic and Oliver to take home the 1969 Best New Artist Grammy.

Elvis Trivia - How Good Are You?

On January 8th this year, Elvis Presley, had he lived, would have been 76 years old. The King is still as relevant today as he ever was with millions of fans around the world. Every year on the anniversaries of his birth and death in August, fans making the pilgrimage to Graceland in Memphis. The Collingwood Elvis Festival, one of the largest annual events in the world, is visited by thousands and thousands of fans. So in honour of 'E' (as his close pals called him), it's Elvis Trivia this time. As usual there are 10 questions and the answers are below the questions. So, 'thank you. Thank you very much' for playing.

1. The second number one for Elvis was b. I Want You, I Need You, I Love You. Don't Be Cruel was his 3rd and Hound Dog was his 4th number one.


2. That legendary songwriting team was c. Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller who wrote 24 song that Elvis recorded, among them hits such as Don't, King Creole, Loving You, Girls! Girls! Girls!, Treat Me Nice, Trouble and Bossa Nova Baby.


3. Elvis final concert was in c. Jacksonville Florida in 1977.


4. SUN Records was owned by Sam Phillips, who also produced Elvis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins among others. Dewey Phillips was the Memphis disc jockey who, in 1954, first played an Elvis song on the radio and Knox Phillips was Sam's son.

7. The NBC TV special "Elvis" was taped at NBC's Studio 4 in Burbank in June of 1968 and aired at 9PM (EST) on December 3, 1968. It was the highest rated television program of the week and was the most watched TV special of 1968 by women 18 to 49.
